New short films about dementia in 6 different languages launched in Bristol

The latest census says there are 12,085 Black African people living in Bristol. Like many languages around the world, Somali has no word for dementia. This can make it even more difficult for family members to discuss a dementia diagnosis and contribute to a stigma in many of these communities.

As you are probably aware, the number of White British people with dementia is expected to double by 2051, but the number of people from BME communities is expected to increase sevenfold within the same timeframe.

To meet this challenge, the Bristol Dementia Wellbeing Service has produced 6 films (in Urdu, Punjabi, Cantonese, Somali, Polish and English-language) titled “Your questions answered – a film about dementia”. Their aim is to address the stigma, misunderstanding and lack of accurate information for culturally diverse communities across the city.

These films are now available to view via the Dementia Wellbeing Service website

The following resources are also available:

  • Leaflets in each of the community languages which tell people how they can view these films online.
  • DVDs for each of the films.
